We like to take backyard hikes to look for interesting animals and plants. It's a great way to get the kids loving the outdoors and teach them about nature. Often I learn as much as they do. During our last hike Ethan found this sleepy frog. I'll often see frogs while mowing, but they are hopping away and too fast to identify. This one probably woke up from hibernation recently and held still long enough for us to photograph.
After our hike I was able to identify this as a wood frog which are easily recognized by their dark mask around their eyes and ridges on each side of its back.
